But did you know? the idol that you worship during this festival is made up of POP (Plaster Of Paris)? POP is made of resins that are non-dissoluble in water and effects nature and marine life adversely leading to water pollution. The resins may take up to years to decompose.
AS per research the state of Maharashtra accounts for 20,00,000 (2 million) idols itself. These idols are made majorly of the Plaster of Paris. Leading to affect marine life and sanitary workers health. The immersions of idols in such a large scale would lead to accumulation of waste in the ground surface.
These idols are the purposely need to be dumped or broken into the pieces by the government so that they dissolve much faster. Such materials are washed off to the shore with the waves and indeed also polluting the land also.

Traditional idols also contain loads of decorative items that are made up of plastic and fiber materials these materials do not dissolve in the water bodies and by polluting the water not only leading to water pollution but also leading to land pollution. These materials take a long time to decompose and hence leading to affecting the marine ecosystem.
Aquatic animals swallow these items and are thereby leading to their premature death. the reason behind this is respiratory problems. Researches have found that the fish catches found in the coast of Mumbai have approximately 2 mg of plastic in the organs of the fishes.
